We are always happy to assist you. Dynamics and diversity—soil fertility and farming livelihoods in Africa Edited by I. Earthscan Publications, London, Paperback, pp. GBP Detailed case studies from Ethiopia, Mali, and Zimbabwe are used toillustrate the complex decision making environment of farmers.

The book develops the concept of resource flows and nutrient balances, initiated in theearly s, to its full potential. Following this new look at soil fertility management, a set of questions is introducedrelated to the targeting of scarcely available resources at the farm level to soil fertilitygradients within farms and the effects and efficiencies of added organic and mineral inputs.

Highlights

Although the authors do acknowledge the benefits of mineral fertiliser inputs, they donot state that such inputs are a necessity to keep agricultural productivity at pace withgrowing demands for food and cash. However, it is generally accepted inthe research and development community that agricultural production can only meet itstargets in a sustainable manner through enhanced capital in terms of extra access tofinancial means, mineral fertiliser inputs, or labour.
